Heavy Police Presence in Maddur Amid BJP Bandh Call After Ganesh Immersion Clashes

Mandya on Alert After Clashes; BJP-JD(S) Back Bandh, 22 Arrested, 2 FIRs Filed

Heavy police deployment continued in Maddur town on Tuesday as authorities maintained a peaceful environment amid a bandh called by the BJP, following communal clashes during a Ganesha immersion procession on Sunday. The bandh, announced by BJP's Mandya district president Indresh N. S. and supported by ally JD(S), stems from the violence that erupted during the festival event.

The clashes began when stones were allegedly thrown at the procession near a mosque in Ram Rahim Nagar, about 500 metres away, leading to retaliation from participants. Police responded with a mild lathi charge to disperse the groups, after which Hindu activists staged protests, including burning tyres and raising slogans.

Mandya Superintendent of Police Mallikarjun Baladandi confirmed that prohibitory orders are in effect until Wednesday morning, with around 800 personnel, including four Superintendents of Police, Additional SPs, and Karnataka State Reserve Police forces, stationed as a precaution. Liquor sales have also been banned to prevent further escalation.

In connection with the incident, police have registered two FIRs—one based on their own investigation and another from an injured complainant's report—resulting in the arrest of 22 individuals. The situation remains under control, with no fresh reports of violence.
