Haryana CM Reviews Pre-Monsoon Measures, Calls For Water Harvesting And Sanitation Upgrades

Haryana CM directs water harvesting, drain cleaning, and improved sanitation.

Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on Monday directed state officials to identify suitable locations for installing water harvesting systems across Haryana, aiming to address waterlogging and promote rainwater conservation. The instructions were given during a meeting with officers from the Urban Local Bodies Department in Chandigarh.

Highlighting recurrent waterlogging issues during the rainy season, Saini stressed the need for proactive measures. He urged officials to review areas with drainage challenges and consider water-harvesting systems as a solution to both conserve water and reduce flooding. “Alternative solutions should be adopted where drainage problems exist, with water harvesting being a key priority,” he said.

The Chief Minister also instructed officials to compile comprehensive data on water-harvesting infrastructure. This would include locations where such systems already exist, their functionality, and areas where new installations are required. He emphasized that priority should be given to regions prone to waterlogging, and that government departments should implement these systems consistently across the state.

In addition to water management, Saini discussed improving sanitation systems. Officials reported the adoption of modern technologies, including RFID-based door-to-door garbage collection and GPS monitoring of waste collection vehicles, to enhance efficiency, transparency, and accountability.

To strengthen monitoring of street sweeping, officials explained that four cameras will be installed on each machine and sensor functionality will be linked to payment verification. Agencies failing to meet operational standards will face penalties, including Rs 1,250 per hour for negligence, and must submit video evidence of their work with monthly bills.

Saini’s directives reflect a dual focus on water conservation and sanitation management, emphasizing the integration of technology and infrastructure planning to tackle recurring urban challenges in Haryana.
