Harpal Singh Cheema Raises Concerns Over Fuel Price Hike And Inflation

Punjab minister criticises fuel price hikes and rising inflation impact.

Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema on Monday launched a sharp attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the recent rise in petrol and diesel prices, criticising what he called the Centre’s indifference toward inflation and the financial burden on ordinary citizens. His remarks came amid fresh fuel price hikes that have triggered political backlash across several states.

Cheema accused the Prime Minister of being disconnected from ground realities and referred to his recent diplomatic gesture of gifting a “Melody toffee” to Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, saying symbolic diplomacy was being prioritised over addressing domestic economic concerns. He argued that the government should focus more on tackling inflation and reviving what he described as a weakening economy.

The Punjab Finance Minister claimed that fuel prices had risen sharply within a short span of time, stating that petrol and diesel rates increased by over Rs 8 per litre between May 15 and May 25. He also alleged significant hikes in LPG and aviation fuel prices, arguing that the cumulative impact of these increases was severely affecting households, farmers, and small businesses.

Cheema further alleged that the Centre’s policies were adding pressure on multiple sectors, including agriculture and trade, and accused the BJP-led government of failing to protect vulnerable sections of society. He claimed that rising prices, currency depreciation, and policy uncertainty were contributing to broader economic stress, which he said was being passed directly onto citizens.

He also criticised the government’s handling of macroeconomic indicators, pointing to the weakening rupee, higher fuel costs, and changes in import and trade policies. According to him, these factors together were worsening inflationary pressures and increasing the cost of living for ordinary families across the country.

The comments come amid a series of political reactions from opposition leaders following repeated fuel price hikes in recent weeks. Congress and Shiromani Akali Dal leaders have also criticised the Centre, warning that rising transportation costs could impact agriculture, essential commodities, and overall economic stability. Meanwhile, oil marketing companies continue to adjust retail prices in line with global crude oil fluctuations and international market conditions.
