Haridwar's Ghats Buried Under Trash After Massive Kanwar Yatra Crowds

Haridwar is facing a major waste-management challenge following the conclusion of the annual Kanwar Yatra, during which nearly five crore pilgrims reportedly visited the city to collect water from the Ganga during the Sawan period. As devotees began returning home after Shivratri, large quantities of waste were left behind across the pilgrimage city. The accumulation has created a difficult cleanup task for local sanitation workers and authorities, particularly around heavily visited areas such as Har Ki Pauri.

Videos from Har Ki Pauri showed sanitation workers clearing discarded clothing, plastic items, Kanwars and other waste from the ghats. Some visuals also showed bottles containing urine among the discarded material. The scenes highlighted the scale of the cleanup operation required after the pilgrimage, with workers removing waste left behind by the large number of visitors who travelled through the city during the religious event.

The post-Yatra cleanup has reportedly involved dealing with thousands of tonnes of waste. The overall quantity of garbage generated during the period has been estimated at around 7,000 tonnes, underscoring the environmental and logistical pressure created by the massive influx of pilgrims. Visuals of sanitation workers handling the accumulated waste without gloves or masks have also raised concerns about the conditions in which those responsible for cleaning the ghats are working.

The situation has renewed attention on waste management during large religious gatherings, where huge crowds can place significant pressure on civic infrastructure. Haridwar, a major pilgrimage destination on the banks of the Ganga, regularly sees large numbers of visitors during religious festivals and yatras. While authorities undertake extensive cleaning operations after such events, the latest scenes from Har Ki Pauri highlight the continuing challenge of ensuring responsible waste disposal, protecting the river environment and providing adequate safety measures for sanitation workers.
