Laid-Off H-1B Techie Cites Loneliness, Visa Stress Behind India Return

H-1B techie returns to India after layoff and loneliness

An Indian tech professional on an H-1B visa has decided to return to India after losing his job in the United States and facing a prolonged search for new employment. Sharing his experience on social media, the techie said the uncertainty surrounding his immigration status, combined with a persistent sense of loneliness, had made his time in the US increasingly difficult. He said he ultimately chose to end his job search there and relocate to India, despite having previously held what he described as a good position.

The techie said he had been searching for a new role since being laid off but found the process increasingly exhausting and uncertain. He revealed that he had come close to securing a position at a major technology company but was unable to convert the opportunity at the final stage. According to his account, the prolonged job hunt added to the pressure he was already experiencing because of his H-1B status. He said visa-related concerns remained in the back of his mind even while he was employed in the US.

Alongside professional uncertainty, the techie also described personal difficulties that influenced his decision to return. He said his engagement ended after the woman's family did not support his decision to eventually move back to India. Reflecting on his experience, he said there had always been an “air of loneliness” around his life in the US. He also questioned whether he had been too rigid in his approach to finding employment, saying he had focused on full-time positions rather than considering alternatives such as consultancy roles or an F-1 CPT programme.

Despite doubts about whether he could have handled the situation differently, the techie said his decision to return to India had been made. He acknowledged feeling anxious about how his career would develop after the move, particularly as he adjusted to a different professional environment. He said he had been working to improve his technical skills and was regularly practising LeetCode and system design in the hope of securing a strong role in India. He also expressed concern about rapidly changing hiring practices and the growing influence of artificial intelligence in technology recruitment.

The techie said it had been only three years since he graduated in the US, but he felt he had not made the career progress he had expected during that period. Returning to India, he said, would require him to adapt to the country's work culture while continuing to build his technical capabilities. His experience highlights the uncertainty that can follow a layoff for skilled foreign workers whose employment is closely linked to immigration status. For such workers, finding a new job can involve not only professional considerations but also significant time and visa-related pressures.

The social media post drew responses from users who largely encouraged him to view the return to India positively. Several commenters described the move as a potential “blessing in disguise” and advised him to focus on rebuilding his career rather than dwelling on the setback. Others encouraged him to prioritise his wellbeing, update his resume and continue interviewing for suitable roles. While the decision reflects one individual's experience, his account illustrates how employment uncertainty, immigration concerns and personal circumstances can collectively influence an Indian professional's decision to leave the US and return home.
