Guwahati-Kolkata Vande Bharat Sleeper Fares Half of Flight Prices, Launch This Month
Vande Bharat sleeper train links Guwahati-Kolkata at fares much cheaper than flights, launch this month.
The much-anticipated Vande Bharat sleeper train service connecting Guwahati and Kolkata is set to be inaugurated later this month, marking a major boost to long-distance rail travel in eastern India. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the service would offer significantly cheaper fares than air travel, making it an attractive option for middle-class passengers. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to flag off the service.
Highlighting affordability, Vaishnaw said the 3-AC fare will be around ₹2,300, 2-AC about ₹3,000, and 1-AC approximately ₹3,600, with meals included. In comparison, airfare between the two cities typically ranges from ₹6,000 to ₹8,000. The minister said fares were carefully designed to ensure comfort at a reasonable cost.
The 16-coach Vande Bharat sleeper train will have a total capacity of 823 passengers. It will include 11 3-AC coaches, four 2-AC coaches, and one 1-AC coach, with most berths allocated to 3-AC. While the train has a design speed of 180 kmph, it will operate at an average speed of 120–130 kmph on this route.

Vaishnaw said the train is expected to begin operations within the next 15–20 days, likely around January 18, pending final confirmation. He described the project as a significant milestone for Indian Railways, particularly for improving connectivity between Assam and West Bengal while passing through key districts along the route.
The sleeper version of Vande Bharat will feature several advanced technologies, including ergonomically designed berths, automatic doors, improved suspension for smoother rides, noise reduction systems, and the Kavach automatic train protection system. An emergency talk-back facility and advanced disinfectant technology, capable of eliminating 99.9% of germs, will also be onboard.
The railway minister said production of Vande Bharat sleeper trains is being accelerated, with eight more expected within six months and 12 by the end of the year. Catering services will reflect regional flavors, with Assamese cuisine served on trains originating from Guwahati and Bengali dishes offered on those starting from Kolkata, enhancing the travel experience further.
