Guwahati Flooded After Heavy Rains, Thousands Stranded

Continuous heavy rains flood Guwahati, Assam, causing severe traffic jams and disrupting daily life.

Guwahati, Assam’s capital, faced severe disruption as heavy rainfall for the second consecutive day inundated major roads, residential areas, and stretches of National Highway-27, bringing life to a standstill. The deluge, lasting 2–3 hours in the afternoon, caused knee-deep to chest-high waterlogging across key areas like Zoo Road, GS Road, Hatigaon, and Panjabari, among others, stranding vehicles and flooding hundreds of homes in the designated “smart city.”

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasted continued heavy to very heavy rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning over the next 24 hours, exacerbating concerns for residents and authorities.

The crisis led to significant challenges, with authorities deploying inflatable rubber boats to rescue people from inundated zones and schools delaying buses during ongoing half-yearly examinations. Residents, including Vaishali Sarma, an assistant professor at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital, expressed anxiety over their children’s safety, while a finance department official reported a 30-minute bus journey for just 200 meters due to severe traffic congestion.

Power outages in several areas compounded the situation, and the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) urged vigilance, keeping emergency response systems on standby and advising the public to follow official weather updates.

The ongoing flooding has reignited criticism of the state government’s failure to address Guwahati’s chronic waterlogging, previously flagged by the Gauhati High Court in August 2023. The court had imposed fines of Rs 1,000 on four departments for their inaction and demanded a mitigation plan, calling the government “not serious” about resolving the perennial issue.

As Guwahati grapples with this latest crisis, the authorities’ response and long-term infrastructure solutions remain under scrutiny, with residents facing mounting challenges in navigating the submerged city.
