Guwahati Couple Posed As House Help, Gained Trust Before Robbery, Police Investigate Case
Guwahati couple posed as house help, robbed homeowners allegedly.
Police in Guwahati have arrested a couple for allegedly carrying out a series of thefts across the city by posing as domestic help, a modus operandi that has triggered concern among residents and brought renewed focus on background verification for household workers in urban areas. According to police, the accused allegedly used fake identities, including false names and residential details, to secure employment in private homes as domestic workers.
Once employed, they reportedly spent time integrating themselves into the household environment, gradually earning the trust of families. Authorities said this trust-building phase was allegedly used as a cover to gain unrestricted access to valuables inside the homes before executing thefts and leaving the premises. The suspected incidents were reported from multiple neighbourhoods across Guwahati, including Noonmati, Fancy Bazar, Birubari, and Basistha.
Police said the spread of complaints across different parts of the city suggested a coordinated pattern rather than isolated incidents, prompting closer scrutiny and eventually leading to the arrests. The repeated similarity in the complaints also raised alarm among residents, particularly in areas where domestic help turnover is frequent.

One of the more recent alleged incidents occurred in the Fancy Bazar area, where a woman identified as Dipali Das, also known as Jonali, is accused of working in a household for several months. According to a police official, she allegedly used that period to build familiarity with the family before breaking open an almirah and escaping with gold jewellery. Investigators said this incident played a key role in identifying a recurring method being used across multiple theft cases in the city.
Police further stated that during the course of the investigation, a man identified as Bhupen Kumar Singh was detained from Pamohi. Based on information obtained during questioning, officers subsequently apprehended Dipali Das alias Jonali. Authorities believe the two may have been working together in carrying out multiple thefts by systematically targeting households that had employed them as domestic help. The investigation also revealed that the stolen jewellery was allegedly sold for around ₹3 lakh.
In connection with the disposal of stolen property, a shop owner identified as Bharat Sonar was also arrested from Burnihat, police said. Officials are now examining whether the accused were part of a wider network or if similar methods have been used in other unsolved theft cases in the region. The case has prompted police to urge residents to exercise caution while hiring domestic workers and to verify identity documents thoroughly, as the investigation continues.
