Gurugram Traffic Crawls as One Hour of Rain Triggers Widespread Waterlogging

Heavy rain brought traffic in Gurugram to a crawl on Saturday, with 36 mm of rainfall recorded within an hour and waterlogging reported across several key roads and junctions. The downpour offered relief from the city’s humid weather but disrupted normal movement for commuters. Traffic was particularly affected along major routes, with vehicles moving slowly through stretches where rainwater accumulated on roads.

Traffic remained slow from Sarhaul Border to Rajiv Chowk as the intense spell of rain overwhelmed several stretches of the city’s road network. The situation created prolonged delays for commuters travelling between major residential, commercial and office areas. Waterlogging forced motorists to navigate through inundated sections, further reducing traffic speed and contributing to congestion during the afternoon.

Several other important areas were also affected by the rainfall, including Sohna Road, Golf Course Extension Road and Udyog Vihar. These corridors witness heavy daily traffic, particularly from office workers and other commuters travelling across Gurugram. The accumulation of water on roads made movement difficult in multiple locations and added to the disruption caused by the sudden downpour.

The rainfall once again highlighted Gurugram’s recurring waterlogging and drainage problems during periods of intense precipitation. Even relatively short spells of heavy rain can lead to significant disruption when drainage systems are unable to clear accumulated water quickly. The resulting congestion can extend well beyond the immediately waterlogged stretches as vehicles are forced to slow down or seek alternative routes.

For commuters, the impact of the rain extended beyond temporary delays, with several journeys taking considerably longer than usual. Waterlogged roads can also create difficulties for pedestrians and two-wheeler riders, particularly in areas where the depth of accumulated water is difficult to assess. The disruption underscores the challenges faced by a rapidly expanding urban centre with heavy traffic volumes and continuing dependence on major arterial roads.

The latest spell of rain has renewed attention on Gurugram’s ability to manage intense rainfall and prevent widespread disruption. While the downpour brought some relief from the prevailing heat and humidity, the resulting congestion demonstrated the continuing impact of waterlogging on daily life. Improving drainage capacity, maintaining existing systems and addressing vulnerable road stretches remain important for reducing the effects of heavy rain on the city’s transport network.
