Gurugram Road Caves In After Heavy Rain, Traffic Diverted At IFFCO Chowk

A service road near IFFCO Chowk in Gurugram caved in on Tuesday, a day after heavy rainfall caused widespread waterlogging across the city. The road damage added to the infrastructure problems faced by Gurugram during the monsoon, with civic authorities moving to secure the affected stretch and begin repair work.
The affected road has a main sewer line operated by the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) running underneath it. The cave-in is believed to be linked to the underground infrastructure beneath the road, although the exact cause and extent of the damage are yet to be established. Traffic police were alerted about the incident and GMDA was informed so that necessary repairs could be undertaken.
To prevent accidents and manage traffic movement, police diverted vehicles away from the damaged section using temporary barricades. The authorities are expected to assess the road and the sewer infrastructure before carrying out restoration work. The incident has raised fresh concerns about the condition of roads and drainage systems in the city after heavy rainfall.

The road cave-in followed heavy rain in Gurugram on Monday, August 24, which led to waterlogging and traffic congestion in several areas. The district administration had advised corporate offices, government and private schools and other institutions to allow employees and students to work from home on August 25. The advisory was intended to reduce traffic congestion and allow civic agencies to carry out repair work on roads and drains.
Although the rainfall lasted for around an hour, several parts of Gurugram experienced severe waterlogging, affecting daily movement across the city. Residents have repeatedly raised concerns about flooding and drainage problems during periods of intense rain, particularly when rainfall continues for longer periods. The disruptions have affected commuters as well as employees and students travelling across the city.
The latest road damage comes amid renewed scrutiny of Gurugram's urban infrastructure and its ability to cope with heavy monsoon rainfall. Authorities are working to address the immediate road and drainage problems, while traffic restrictions around the affected stretch are expected to remain in place until the area is made safe. The incident has once again brought attention to the need for effective drainage and road maintenance in Gurugram.
