Gurugram Launches Advanced Heart And Lung Transplant Centre
The state-of-the-art centre offers lifesaving transplants for patients across North India.
A state-of-the-art heart and lung transplant centre has been inaugurated at Artemis Hospitals in Gurugram, poised to transform healthcare access for patients across Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and the Delhi-NCR region. Led by Dr Sandeep Attawar, a renowned expert from KIMS Hospitals, Hyderabad, the facility addresses a critical gap in North India, where patients previously faced long journeys to southern transplant hubs for life-saving procedures.
The centre, launched on Friday, integrates cutting-edge technology and comprehensive care, from pre-transplant evaluations to post-operative rehabilitation, ensuring patients with advanced heart failure or terminal lung disease receive holistic treatment. Dr Devlina Chakravarty, managing director of Artemis Hospitals, emphasised its significance, stating, “This centre is a lifeline for patients who no longer need to travel far for quality transplant care.” A unique feature allows patients to register simultaneously in two states, enhancing donor matching efficiency and boosting timely transplant prospects.
Dr Attawar highlighted the logistical advantages of Gurugram’s location within the National Capital Region, which streamlines organ transport and reduces delays, improving patient outcomes. The facility also offers advanced mechanical circulatory support, including Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) and Left Ventricular Assist Devices (LVAD), as temporary or long-term solutions for those awaiting transplants or ineligible for surgery. These innovations underscore the centre’s commitment to restoring not just survival but also dignity and quality of life, as noted by Artemis chairman Onkar S. Kanwar.

With India reporting over 3,000 heart and lung transplants annually, the demand for accessible, high-quality facilities is rising. The Gurugram centre, equipped to handle complex cases and supported by a robust post-transplant care programme, positions itself as a beacon of hope for thousands in the region. By reducing travel burdens and leveraging regional connectivity, Artemis Hospitals aims to set a new standard in thoracic organ transplantation, aligning with India’s broader push to strengthen specialised healthcare infrastructure.
