Gujarat Grapples With Disruptions As Unseasonal Rain Hits State

Unseasonal rain disrupts transport, markets and routine life across Gujarat

Unseasonal rain and thunderstorms have lashed several parts of Gujarat, disrupting daily life in cities and villages even as authorities warn of more wet and gusty weather over the next few days. The unexpected showers have brought down daytime temperatures in some regions, while strong winds and sporadic hail have added to the inconvenience for commuters and residents.

The India Meteorological Department had flagged a spell of unseasonal rainfall from March 18–21 triggered by a western disturbance and cyclonic circulation over west Rajasthan, affecting north Gujarat, Saurashtra–Kutch and parts of south Gujarat. Districts including Banaskantha, Sabarkantha, Patan, Rajkot, Jamnagar, Morbi, Kutch, Junagadh, Amreli, Bhavnagar and several others have reported scattered rain, thunder and, in a few places, hail, leading to wet roads, waterlogging and traffic snarls.

Authorities say daily routines have been thrown off across urban and rural areas, with students, office‑goers and shoppers facing delays and cancellations due to rain‑clogged roads and disrupted public‑transport schedules. In some semi‑arid belts of north Gujarat, villages are grappling with muddy tracks and limited vehicular movement, while high‑speed winds in places such as Ahmedabad, Mehsana and Gandhinagar have caused minor power‑outage reports and fallen branches.

The agriculture department has also issued an advisory to farmers, warning that the unseasonal rain and hail could threaten standing and partially harvested crops in Saurashtra and Kutch. Officials have urged farmers to take protective measures, such as covering produce and avoiding delayed harvesting, as further light to moderate showers are forecast in many districts over the coming days.

Even as the rain offers temporary relief from the rising pre‑summer heat, meteorologists caution that the unsettled weather may persist for at least another 48 hours, with the possibility of gusty winds and isolated thunderstorms. Local administrations and emergency services are on high alert, advising the public to avoid sea excursions and to stay informed through official weather bulletins as the unseasonal spell continues to affect large parts of Gujarat.
