Gujarat Flood Crisis: PM Modi Steps In as More NDRF Teams Arrive

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday reviewed the heavy rainfall and flood situation in Gujarat with Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and assured full support from the Central Government for ongoing rescue, relief and public safety operations. The discussion took place as several districts in South Gujarat continued to face disruption due to intense monsoon rains, with authorities increasing emergency response measures.
During the telephone conversation, Prime Minister Modi took stock of the impact of the rainfall and the steps being taken by the state administration to assist affected residents. According to the Gujarat government, the Prime Minister assured that the Centre would provide all necessary assistance to support rescue operations and ensure the safety of people in flood-affected areas.
The state government has intensified relief efforts in Valsad district, one of the worst-affected regions due to the continuing rainfall. Three teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and five teams of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) are already deployed in the district. To strengthen operations, two additional NDRF teams were airlifted from New Delhi and are expected to join rescue efforts in Valsad.

Additional support is also being provided by other agencies. An Army contingent comprising 70 personnel equipped with five boats has been deployed to assist in rescue operations, while a 25-member fire service team is being sent to support local authorities. The latest reinforcements follow multiple reviews conducted by the Gujarat government to assess the impact of the monsoon situation.
Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel earlier visited the State Emergency Operation Centre in Gandhinagar and held discussions with senior officials and district collectors. He reviewed the situation in Valsad with the district administration and Minister Naresh Patel, while also directing officials in Surat and Navsari to relocate residents from low-lying and waterlogged areas to safer locations wherever required.
Heavy rainfall has affected several parts of South Gujarat over the past two days, causing flooding and infrastructure disruptions. In Dang district, several roads were closed due to heavy rain, while overflow warnings were issued near the Juj and Keliya dams in Navsari district. Rescue teams also evacuated residents from affected areas in Tapi district, and schools remained closed in Surat as a precaution. The India Meteorological Department has forecast further heavy to very heavy rainfall in parts of South and central Gujarat, with authorities continuing to monitor the situation.
