Gujarat Braces for Torrential Rains: IMD Issues Red Alert Amid Monsoon Fury

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for multiple districts in Gujarat, warning of extremely heavy rainfall through September 8, 2025, as the state grapples with an intensified monsoon.
Districts including Banaskantha, Sabarkantha, Aravalli, Mehsana, Surendranagar, and Kutch are expected to face torrential downpours, with some areas potentially receiving over 30 cm of rain. The alert follows a low-pressure system over northwest Madhya Pradesh and southeast Rajasthan, which is likely to strengthen into a depression, fueling severe weather across northern and eastern Gujarat.
Heavy rainfall has already lashed the state, with Kaprada in Valsad recording 182 mm in 12 hours and Umarpada in Surat receiving 8 inches. The IMD forecasts continued intense showers, particularly in Saurashtra and Kutch on September 7-8, raising concerns about flash floods, waterlogging, and traffic disruptions.

Authorities have deployed 12 NDRF and 20 SDRF teams, with an additional NDRF unit on standby in Vadodara. Chief Secretary Pankaj Joshi led an emergency meeting at the State Emergency Operations Centre in Gandhinagar to coordinate preparedness, emphasizing crowd management during Ganesh Visarjan and the Ambaji Bhadarvi Poonam Mela.
