GRSE Launches Final Anti-Submarine Warship for Indian Navy
Ajay’s launch marks milestone in naval defense
Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd, a leading defense PSU, launched the eighth and final Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW SWC), named INS Ajay, for the Indian Navy on Monday. The ceremony, held in Kolkata, was graced by Priya Deshmukh, wife of Vice Admiral Kiran Deshmukh, Chief of Materiel, Indian Navy, who officiated the launch.
INS Ajay, part of the Arnala-class, completes GRSE’s ₹6,311 crore contract to deliver eight ASW SWCs, designed to bolster India’s coastal defense against submarine threats in the Indian Ocean Region. These 77.6-meter-long, 10.5-meter-wide vessels, with over 90% indigenous content, are equipped for full-scale sub-surface surveillance, low-intensity maritime operations, and mine-laying. Powered by a diesel engine-waterjet combination, they carry lightweight torpedoes, ASW rockets, and mines, enabling coordinated operations with aircraft.
A GRSE official highlighted the ships’ versatility, noting their low draught enables effective coastal operations. This launch, following INS Arnala’s commissioning in June, underscores GRSE’s pivotal role in India’s naval modernization and the ‘Make in India’ initiative, enhancing maritime security amid growing regional challenges.
