Greater Bengaluru Authority to Enforce Strict Rules on Feeding Stray Dogs After Supreme Court Order
Bengaluru introduces rules to regulate stray dog feeding after Supreme Court directive.
Following a Supreme Court directive aimed at addressing the rising number of stray dog bite incidents, the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) is set to introduce stringent guidelines regulating the feeding of stray dogs within the city. This move comes amid increased public health concerns, including several rabies cases linked to stray dog attacks, which have particularly affected vulnerable groups such as children and the elderly.
Under the new rules, the animal-husbandry department, in collaboration with GBA officials, will identify specific locations across Bengaluru where feeding stray dogs will be permitted. Feeding outside these designated zones will be strictly prohibited. To enforce compliance, authorities plan to issue warnings and take action against individuals found feeding stray dogs at unauthorized locations, thereby adhering to the Supreme Court’s mandate.
The guidelines also encourage citizens to adopt and care for stray dogs under the framework provided by the Animal Welfare Board. This initiative aims to promote responsible animal welfare practices and reduce the risk of uncontrolled stray dog populations in public spaces.

To facilitate monitoring and reporting, the Bengaluru municipal corporation has established a dedicated helpline, allowing residents to lodge complaints if they encounter violations related to the feeding of stray dogs. The GBA’s comprehensive approach seeks to balance public safety concerns with humane treatment of the city’s stray dog population.
These measures reflect a growing effort by local authorities to address stray dog-related challenges through regulated actions rather than ad hoc solutions, ensuring the safety and well-being of Bengaluru’s residents and animals alike.
