Govt Maintains 100% CNG and PNG Supply, Pushes Households to Shift From LPG

Government assures uninterrupted CNG and PNG supply nationwide, promotes shift from LPG to piped gas connections.

The government on Monday assured that the supply of compressed natural gas (CNG) and piped natural gas (PNG) continues uninterrupted across India, even as authorities encourage households with access to piped gas to reduce reliance on LPG cylinders amid the ongoing crisis triggered by the US-Israel conflict in Iran.

Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary (Marketing & Oil Refinery) at the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, said fuel pumps supplying CNG and household PNG connections are operating normally, with no reports of shortages. “Crude is available in sufficient quantity. All refineries are operating at the highest capacity. Our petrol pumps are operating normally. No dry out has been reported anywhere,” she stated at an inter-ministerial briefing.

The ministry confirmed that supplies to both CNG users and PNG consumers are being maintained fully. Alongside this, the government has begun enforcement actions to prevent hoarding, conducting raids in several states to check fuel storage and distribution.

In addition, the government is encouraging households with piped gas connections to rely on PNG instead of LPG cylinders. An order issued on March 14 requested consumers who hold both PNG and LPG connections to surrender their LPG connections, reflecting a push toward more sustainable and readily available energy sources.

To support the transition, gas distribution companies have launched incentives for new PNG users. Indraprastha Gas Ltd (IGL) announced free gas worth ₹500 for consumers registering for PNG connections before March 31. Similar promotional offers are being rolled out by Mahanagar Gas Ltd (MGL), GAIL, and BPCL to encourage households to adopt piped natural gas.

The ministry emphasized that adopting alternative energy sources where possible will help households manage their energy needs efficiently while easing the demand pressure on LPG during the current global supply disruptions.
