Govind Mohan to Continue as Home Secretary For Another Year
Appointments Committee approves another year for two senior officials.
Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan has been granted a one-year extension in his current position. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved the extension on Wednesday, allowing the senior bureaucrat to continue overseeing key responsibilities within the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Mohan was appointed Union Home Secretary in 2024 and has since served as the top administrative official in the ministry. The latest decision ensures continuity in the Home Ministry’s leadership as it handles matters concerning internal security, Centre-state coordination, border management and disaster response.
The Union Home Secretary plays a central role in coordinating administrative and security-related policies across the country. The office also works closely with state governments, central security agencies and other Union ministries while assisting the political leadership in implementing decisions related to domestic affairs.

The extension allows Mohan to continue managing these responsibilities without an immediate leadership transition. Tenure extensions for senior officials are generally intended to maintain administrative continuity, particularly in departments handling sensitive policy matters and coordination between multiple government institutions.
The Appointments Committee also approved a one-year extension for Cabinet Secretary T V Somanathan, who was appointed to the position in 2024. However, the decision concerning Mohan is particularly significant for the Home Ministry, where the Home Secretary serves as its highest-ranking civil servant.
With the extension now approved, Mohan will remain responsible for supervising the ministry’s administrative operations and coordinating its work with security agencies and state administrations. The government did not provide further details in the available announcement about additional conditions attached to his extended tenure.
