Government Report Confirms 110 Crore Academic Records Digitised Under Digital India Initiative

Government highlights massive digitisation of academic records nationwide.

On the occasion of the 11th anniversary of Digital India, the Government of India reported that more than 110 crore academic records have been digitised under its nationwide digital governance initiative. The update was shared through a Press Information Bureau (PIB) report, which highlighted the transformation of public service delivery since the programme was launched in 2015. The government said the initiative has played a key role in improving efficiency, transparency and accessibility across sectors, particularly in education.

According to the report, Digital India has strengthened India’s digital public infrastructure by promoting citizen-centric governance and expanding the use of trusted digital platforms. In the education sector, this transformation aligns with the goals of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which encourages lifelong learning, academic flexibility and the adoption of secure digital credentials. The government emphasised that these systems are helping modernise academic administration and reduce dependence on physical documentation.

The report further noted that key platforms such as the Academic Bank of Credits (ABC) and the National Academic Depository (NAD) have become central to this ecosystem. The ABC enables students to store, transfer and redeem academic credits digitally, simplifying mobility across institutions. Meanwhile, the NAD serves as a secure repository for academic awards, allowing institutions to issue and verify certificates, degrees and mark sheets in digital form.

As per the latest figures cited in the report, 2,963 higher education institutions have registered on the ABC platform. Additionally, more than 26.29 crore APAAR IDs have been generated, while over 110.65 crore academic records have already been uploaded. These numbers reflect the increasing adoption of digital education infrastructure across universities and colleges in India.

The government stated that the integration of ABC, NAD, APAAR and DigiLocker has created a unified digital academic ecosystem. This system allows secure storage, seamless exchange and instant verification of academic records across platforms. It also improves interoperability between institutions and supports smoother academic transitions for students across different stages of education.

Officials said these digital initiatives are helping reduce paperwork while improving trust and transparency in credential verification for admissions, scholarships, internships and employment. By enabling real-time access to authenticated academic data, the system is also strengthening lifelong learning opportunities and aligning with broader national goals for a digitally empowered education framework.
