Government Allows Wheat Exports Following Four-Year Restriction
Improved stocks prompt the Centre to allow wheat exports, reversing a four-year restriction.
The Union government has approved the export of wheat, marking a significant policy shift after a four-year ban imposed to safeguard domestic food security and control inflation. The decision comes amid improved production estimates and stable buffer stocks, according to official sources familiar with the development.
The Centre had prohibited wheat exports in 2022 following a sharp rise in global prices and concerns over domestic supply triggered by heatwave-induced crop damage. The restriction was aimed at ensuring adequate availability in the domestic market and containing food inflation. Since then, limited shipments were permitted only on a government-to-government basis to meet specific requests from vulnerable countries.
Officials indicated that the latest approval reflects a more comfortable supply position, supported by higher procurement and replenished reserves held by the Food Corporation of India. The move is also expected to benefit farmers by enabling access to international markets, potentially improving price realisation amid favourable global demand conditions.

Industry stakeholders have welcomed the decision, noting that India’s re-entry into the export market could help stabilise global wheat supplies, especially at a time when disruptions in key producing regions have tightened availability. However, analysts caution that export volumes may be closely monitored to prevent any adverse impact on domestic prices.
The government is expected to issue detailed guidelines outlining export procedures, eligibility norms and monitoring mechanisms. Policymakers have reiterated that food security and price stability will remain paramount, and that trade measures will be calibrated in response to evolving domestic and international market dynamics.
