Goods Train Derails Near Anuppur In Madhya Pradesh, No Casualties Reported

Three waggons derailed near Kotma station; rail traffic was restored within two hours.

Three waggons of a goods train derailed near Kotma railway station in Madhya Pradesh's Anuppur district late Saturday night, causing a temporary disruption to rail traffic but resulting in no casualties, officials confirmed on September 21, 2025. The incident, reported by the South East Central Railway's (SECR) Bilaspur division, occurred around 11:30 p.m. as the freight train en route to Govinda siding for coal loading veered off the tracks approximately 100 metres from the station.

SECR Bilaspur Division Publicity Inspector Ambikesh Sahu stated that a dedicated railway team was dispatched to the site immediately upon receiving the alert. The derailment affected the up and down lines, but swift restoration efforts ensured normal operations resumed within two hours, by early Sunday morning. SECR Chief Public Relations Officer Vipul Suskar, speaking from Bilaspur in Chhattisgarh, noted that traffic was fully restored, with ongoing work to repair the loop line to prevent future disruptions.

No injuries or damage to personnel were reported, underscoring the effectiveness of safety protocols in handling such incidents. The train was carrying coal, a critical commodity for India's energy sector, highlighting the importance of reliable freight networks in the resource-rich central region. Anuppur, located in a coal belt, frequently sees heavy rail traffic for mining operations, making quick recovery essential for supply chains.

The cause of the derailment is under investigation by railway authorities, with initial assessments pointing to potential track or waggon issues. Further action, including maintenance upgrades, will follow the probe's findings, as per Sahu. This event comes amid ongoing efforts by Indian Railways to enhance infrastructure safety, following a series of minor derailments in the past year attributed to ageing tracks and overloading. Rail services in the Bilaspur-Gevra Road corridor, a vital coal evacuation route, have since normalised, avoiding broader economic ripple effects.
