‘Good Sign for Bilateral Ties’: Leaders React to PM Modi-Trump Conversation
PM Modi and President Trump discuss progress of India-US strategic partnership; leaders call it a positive step.
Political leaders across party lines on Friday welcomed the recent telephonic interaction between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump, describing it as a constructive step toward strengthening the India–US strategic partnership. The leaders praised the timing of the conversation, which focused on bilateral ties, global developments, and the need to advance cooperation in key sectors.
BJP MP Shashank Mani Tripathi said the call could pave the way for clearer economic relations, noting that misunderstandings created by past tariff disputes had strained perceptions. He argued that a balanced, mutually beneficial trade agreement would boost India’s economy and play a role in easing inflation. Tripathi called the renewed engagement between the two nations “a good sign” for global and domestic markets.
Echoing similar views, BJP MP Rajkumar Chahar said the Prime Minister’s decisions—whether in dialogue with Trump, Putin, or any world leader—are always guided by India’s national interest. He emphasised that Modi’s leadership has consistently positioned India as an active global player, engaging with major powers to secure long-term strategic advantages for its 1.4 billion citizens.

Opposition leaders also acknowledged the importance of the renewed engagement. Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi said it was encouraging to see two leading democracies deepen their partnership, especially at a time when trade negotiations remain stalled. She raised concerns about high US tariffs but expressed hope that sustained dialogue would help both countries finalise the long-pending trade agreement and restore predictability for businesses.
TDP MP Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu offered a more pragmatic view, stressing that India must prioritise its self-respect and national aspirations as it expands its global partnerships. He noted that India’s robust 8.2% growth makes it an attractive market for the US, while India’s service sector continues to bolster American industries. The MP insisted that cooperation must remain balanced so that neither country gains undue advantage over the other.
According to official statements, Modi and Trump used the call to review progress in the India–US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership. They expressed satisfaction at the steady strengthening of cooperation in defence, critical technologies, energy, security and other areas under the India–US COMPACT framework—an initiative aimed at accelerating military collaboration, commerce and technological exchange. Both leaders also agreed to work closely on emerging regional and global challenges, reaffirming their shared commitment to peace, stability and prosperity.
