India-Pakistan Tensions Ease: 32 Airports to Reopen After Standoff

In a significant step toward normalcy, civil aviation authorities in India have announced the reopening of 32 airports across northern and western India, previously closed due to heightened military tensions with Pakistan.

The airports, shuttered from May 9 to May 15, 2025, following armed conflict, will resume civilian flight operations soon, with a formal announcement expected shortly, according to official sources.

The closures, enforced through Notices to Airmen (NOTAMs) issued by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and other aviation bodies, disrupted air travel, forcing airlines like Air India and IndiGo to cancel or reroute flights.

The decision to reopen comes after a ceasefire agreement, signaling de-escalation between the nuclear-armed neighbors. Pakistan also reopened its airspace on May 11, 2025, restoring normal flight operations.

The affected airports, primarily near the India-Pakistan border, include major hubs and strategic locations. The full list comprises: Adampur, Ambala, Amritsar, Awantipur, Bathinda, Bhuj, Bikaner, Chandigarh, Dharamshala, Halwara, Hindon, Jaisalmer, Jammu, Jamnagar, Jodhpur, Kangra, Kullu, Leh, Ludhiana, Mundra, Pathankot, Patiala, Porbandar, Rajkot, Shimla, Srinagar, Thoise, Udhampur, Uttarlai, Ahmedabad, Surat, and Vadodara.

This development is expected to ease congestion on alternate routes, particularly over Mumbai, and reduce operational costs for airlines. Passengers are advised to check with airlines for updated flight schedules as operations resume, marking a return to stability in the region’s aviation sector.
