Gehlot Slams BJP as Student Union Polls Stall in Rajasthan

Ashok Gehlot backs students' demand to resume union elections in Rajasthan, slams BJP for continued delay.

Former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has come out strongly in support of a growing student movement demanding the immediate resumption of student union elections in the state, accusing the current BJP-led government of dragging its feet despite months in power.

A group of university students met Gehlot on Thursday, voicing frustration over the continued suspension of campus elections. Gehlot, a senior Congress leader, said he had already raised the issue earlier and firmly backed the students’ demand.

Recalling past events, he pointed out that student union polls had been suspended during the BJP regime from 2003 to 2008, but were revived by the Congress government in 2010. The elections were again halted in 2020 due to COVID-19, but a decision to restart them was taken in 2022 under his leadership.

“In 2023, elections were postponed due to colleges being used for assembly polls and the rollout of the new National Education Policy,” Gehlot said. “But now, even after being in power since December 2023, the BJP government has done nothing to restore them.”

Gehlot’s remarks have added fresh fuel to the debate as students across Rajasthan ramp up pressure for a return to democratic representation on campus.
