Gajendra Singh Shekhawat: Religion Is Path to Self-Improvement, Not Just Ritual
Chadar Mahotsav returns in Jaisalmer after 144 years with spiritual gathering.
The historic desert city of Jaisalmer witnessed a rare spiritual gathering on Saturday as the sacred Chadar Mahotsav of Dada Gurudev Jindatt Surishwar Maharaj was celebrated after a gap of 144 years. The ceremonial “Divine Chadar” emerged from the iconic Jaisalmer Fort, drawing saints, devotees and visitors from across the country to witness the historic occasion.
Union Minister for Culture and Tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat attended the event as the chief guest and described the sacred chadar as more than just a symbolic cloth. According to him, it represents faith, protection and the spiritual heritage of Jaisalmer. He recalled that when a severe epidemic struck the city 144 years ago, the appearance of the chadar was believed to have brought relief to the people, strengthening its spiritual significance among devotees.
Shekhawat said the reappearance of the sacred chadar and its public viewing after more than a century offered devotees an opportunity to renew their spiritual commitment. Reflecting on India’s philosophical traditions, he highlighted the revered role of the Guru, noting that spiritual guides have long been regarded as sources of wisdom who help individuals discover truth and direction in life.
