Founder of the Yusuf Meherally Centre, Parikh played pivotal roles in India's freedom movements.
Dr G G Parikh, a revered socialist leader and freedom fighter, died early Thursday at his residence in Mumbai at the age of 101. Parikh, known for his lifelong dedication to rural development and empowering marginalised communities, founded the Yusuf Meherally Centre (YMC) near Panvel in the Raigad district. The organisation focuses on grassroots initiatives, including education, health, and livelihood programmes for underprivileged groups, reflecting Parikh's commitment to social justice and self-reliance.
YMC General Secretary Madhukar Mohite confirmed Parikh's passing and noted he is survived by a daughter and a grandson. Parikh's body will be available for public homage at Janata Kendra near the RTO in Mumbai's Tardeo area from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, after which it will be donated to J J Hospital for medical research, honouring his ethos of service to humanity.
Parikh's activism spanned decades, beginning with the Indian independence struggle. He endured 10 months in jail during the 1942 Quit India Movement and was arrested again for opposing the Emergency in 1975-77. He also played a pivotal role in the Samyukta Maharashtra Movement, advocating for a Marathi-speaking state, and the Goa Liberation Movement, which helped integrate the Portuguese enclave into India in 1961. These efforts underscored his unwavering fight against colonialism and authoritarianism, earning him respect across political spectrums.
