Four More Singapore-Based Witnesses Join Zubeen Garg Death Investigation

Assam Police record statements of Singapore-based expats in ongoing probe into Zubeen Garg’s death.

Four Assamese expatriates from Singapore, who reportedly witnessed singer Zubeen Garg’s last moments, appeared before the Assam Police on Monday as part of the ongoing investigation into his death in Singapore. The four—Jiolangsat Narzary, Parikshit Sharma, Siddhartha Bora, and Bhaskar Jyoti Dutta—responded to the second summons issued by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). According to CID Special DGP Munna Prasad Gupta, their statements regarding the events leading to Garg’s death are currently being recorded. Police expect additional Assamese NRIs from Singapore to appear within the next 48 hours.

The investigation follows Garg’s mysterious death on September 19, while attending the 4th North East India Festival in Singapore. He allegedly drowned during a yacht outing arranged by members of the Assam Association Singapore, who were reportedly present at the time. Earlier, only one expat, Rupkamal Kalita, had appeared for questioning, while several others had ignored earlier notices. Fresh summonses were issued to 10 members who missed the initial deadline of October 6.

So far, seven individuals have been arrested in connection with the case, including festival organisers Shyamkanu Mahanta and Garg’s manager Siddharth Sharma, two band members, the singer’s cousin, and his personal security officers. They face charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including murder, culpable homicide not amounting to murder, criminal conspiracy, and causing death by negligence. Remand periods for some detainees, such as Mahanta and Sharma, are set to expire soon, limiting further police custody.

The probe is being coordinated with Singaporean authorities under the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT), with the Indian government providing information via the Indian High Commission. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed that a “definite angle” has emerged following the viscera report from a second post-mortem conducted at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital. The CID-led Special Investigation Team continues to actively investigate the case, having received and shared relevant data with Singaporean police to advance the cross-border inquiry.
