Former Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit Reportedly Made to Wait at Parliament

Former governor reportedly made to wait at Parliament premises.

Former Tamil Nadu Governor and ex-Member of Parliament Banwarilal Purohit was reportedly made to wait at the Parliament complex on Monday while attempting to complete formalities related to the issuance of his renewed identity card, an incident that has drawn attention within parliamentary circles. According to details of the episode, Purohit arrived at the Parliament premises around noon to collect his updated identity card issued to former Members of Parliament.

The visit took place at a time when access and administrative procedures inside the new Parliament building are being managed under a revised security framework, with the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) now fully responsible for security operations. Parliamentary secretariat staff are also assisting trained security personnel in handling administrative functions, including entry permissions and pass issuance.

Upon arrival, the former MP from Nagpur reportedly entered the reception area without any accompanying assistants. He underwent routine security checks before proceeding to the Centralised Pass Issue Cell (CPIC), where identity cards and entry passes for visitors, staff, and former parliamentarians are processed. The CPIC is typically responsible for managing a high volume of applications and clearances throughout the day, particularly during peak hours when parliamentary activity is at its highest.

At the time of his visit, officials at the counter were reportedly engaged in issuing entry passes to a large number of visitors, including ministers’ assistants, drivers, and other supporting staff. The lunch-hour rush further added to the workload, leading to a congested administrative environment at the facility. Amid these circumstances, sources indicated that officials did not immediately recognise Purohit and he was made to wait for a considerable period.

Despite reportedly making multiple inquiries at the counter regarding the status of his identity card process, he did not receive prompt attention from the officials on duty. The delay, according to sources familiar with the matter, was not intentional but occurred due to the simultaneous handling of multiple urgent requests and the high-pressure environment in the pass issuance section at the time.

The incident has since drawn interest in political and administrative circles, given Purohit’s previous role as Governor of Tamil Nadu and his long parliamentary career. It has also brought renewed focus on the functioning of administrative counters within the Parliament complex, especially after the transition of security responsibilities to the CISF and the increased emphasis on regulated access in the new building.

Officials have not released any formal statement regarding the matter, and it remains unclear whether any internal review will be conducted. However, the episode highlights the operational challenges faced in balancing stringent security protocols with efficient public and former-member services inside one of the country’s most high-security institutions.
