Former Punjab And Haryana High Court Judge Grewal Takes Charge As NCLT President
Retired judge Grewal appointed NCLT President, succeeding Ramalingam Sudhakar after cabinet approval.
Retired judge Anupinder Singh Grewal has been appointed as the President of the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT), marking a significant development in India’s corporate judicial framework. His appointment was cleared by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet and will be for a term of five years or until he reaches the age of 67, whichever comes earlier. The role places him at the helm of a key institution responsible for adjudicating corporate disputes, insolvency cases, and company law matters.
Grewal succeeds Ramalingam Sudhakar, who had been serving as NCLT President since November 1, 2021, and demitted office earlier this year. The leadership transition comes at a crucial time when the tribunal continues to handle a growing number of cases under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code and other corporate laws. Observers note that the appointment is expected to ensure continuity and stability within the tribunal’s functioning.
Beginning his legal career in 1992 at the Punjab and Haryana High Court, Grewal built extensive experience across various roles representing the state of Punjab. He served as Assistant Advocate General, Deputy Advocate General, and later Senior Deputy Advocate General before being appointed Additional Advocate General. His legal practice covered a wide spectrum, including constitutional law, service matters, arbitration, and public law, establishing him as a seasoned legal professional.

In 2007, he was appointed Central Government Counsel, and in 2009, he became Senior Panel Counsel representing the Union of India before the High Court. During this period, he handled several high-profile and complex cases, and was also appointed amicus curiae in important matters, including those dealing with procedural validity in judicial orders. His work during these years reflected a strong engagement with constitutional principles and judicial processes.
Grewal was elevated as an Additional Judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court on September 25, 2014, before being transferred to the Rajasthan High Court later that year. He was confirmed as a permanent judge on May 20, 2016, and subsequently transferred back to Punjab and Haryana High Court, where he continued to serve until his retirement on March 10, 2026. Over his judicial career, he was known for rulings that emphasized police accountability, administrative fairness, and the protection of vulnerable sections of society.
Born on March 10, 1964, Grewal received his early education in Chandigarh and Patiala before pursuing higher studies at St Stephen’s College, where he completed his B.A. (Hons) and M.A. in History. He later earned his LL.B. from the University of Delhi in 1992. Coming from a family with a background in public service—his father a former Chief Engineer in Punjab PWD and his maternal grandfather an IAS officer—Grewal’s appointment reflects a long-standing commitment to law and governance.
