Former Goa Minister Jennifer Monserrate Passes Away After Extended Illness At 56

Sitting Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA and former Goa minister Jennifer Monserrate passed away on Sunday after a prolonged illness, her family confirmed. She was 56. Monserrate, who represented the Taleigao assembly constituency, had withdrawn from public life in recent months as she focused on her health. Monserrate was a prominent political figure in Goa and had served as a three-term legislator. She was first elected to the Goa Assembly from Taleigao on a Congress ticket, alongside her husband Atanasio "Babush" Monserrate, who represented the neighbouring Santa Cruz constituency.

The couple later became key figures in Goa's political landscape. In 2019, Jennifer Monserrate and her husband were among 10 Congress legislators who switched to the BJP. Following the political shift, she was inducted into the Goa cabinet and served as the Minister for Information Technology and Revenue. During her tenure, she handled important administrative responsibilities and continued her work as a representative of Taleigao.

Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant expressed grief over her passing and paid tribute to her contribution to public life. In a post on X, Sawant described Monserrate as the first woman MLA from Taleigao and praised her dedication towards her constituency and the people of Goa. "Deeply pained by the sad demise of Smt. Jennifer Monserrate ji, MLA of Taleigao and former Cabinet Minister. As the first woman MLA of Taleigao and a three-term legislator, she served the people of her constituency and Goa with dedication and compassion," Sawant said.

Monserrate's political career was closely linked with developments in Goa's state politics over the past decade. Her transition from the Congress to the BJP was part of a major political realignment in the state and strengthened the ruling party's position in the assembly. Her supporters and party colleagues remembered her as a leader who remained connected with residents and worked on constituency-related concerns.
