Asish Banerjee, former deputy speaker of the West Bengal Assembly and a close aide of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, was found dead on Sunday morning at a Trinamool Congress office near his residence in Rampurhat, Birbhum district. Police said his body was found hanging and has been sent for postmortem examination. The circumstances surrounding his death are being investigated.
Banerjee was a five-time MLA from Rampurhat and had held several important responsibilities in the West Bengal government during Mamata Banerjee's tenure as chief minister. He served as deputy speaker of the state Assembly and had also been associated with the education and agriculture portfolios after the Trinamool Congress first came to power in the state.
The former legislator lived in the Hattalapara neighbourhood of Rampurhat, where news of his death drew a large crowd outside his residence and the nearby party office. Local residents and Trinamool Congress workers gathered at the spot as police began proceedings and arranged for the postmortem examination.

Banerjee had stepped down as chairman of the Trinamool Congress' Birbhum district core committee in June. At the time, he indicated that he would continue as an ordinary member of the party. His political career in Rampurhat had spanned several election cycles, although he suffered a defeat in the latest state Assembly election.
He lost the Rampurhat seat to BJP candidate Dhruba Saha in the recent election. The result reflected a broader shift in Birbhum, where the BJP won six of the district's 11 Assembly constituencies, compared with just one in 2021. The Trinamool Congress had won 10 seats in the district in the previous Assembly election.
Police have begun examining the circumstances of Banerjee's death, while the postmortem report is expected to provide further information. Further details are awaited as investigators continue their proceedings at the Trinamool Congress office and surrounding area.
