Former Arunachal MLA Kapchen Rajkumar Killed in Tragic Elephant Attack

Former Arunachal MLA Kapchen Rajkumar died after a wild elephant attack while traveling in Tirap district.

In a shocking incident from Arunachal Pradesh, former MLA Kapchen Rajkumar lost his life early Wednesday morning after being attacked by a wild elephant while walking from his native Namsang village to Deomali town in Tirap district.

The 65-year-old former legislator, who represented the then Khonsa North Assembly Constituency from 1985 to 1990, was known for his grassroots leadership and commitment to public service. He is survived by his wife and several children.

Confirming the incident, Tirap Superintendent of Police Aditya said the tragic encounter took place in a forested stretch between the two towns.

Chief Minister Pema Khandu expressed deep sorrow over Rajkumar’s untimely demise, calling it a “profound loss” for the state. “His dedication to serving the community and his contributions to our society will always be remembered,” Khandu posted on social media. He also assured that the ex-gratia grant process for the bereaved family has been initiated.

Environment and Forest Minister Wangki Lowang, the current MLA from Namsang, also paid tribute. “Deeply saddened… My heartfelt condolences to his family. May his soul rest in peace,” Lowang wrote.

Born on April 15, 1960, in Namsang village, Rajkumar was the son of Wangmei Rajkumar, a former acting village chief. A former student of Ramakrishna Mission School in Deomali and Government Higher Secondary School, Khonsa, he had also trained as a commercial pilot at Safdarjung Airport, New Delhi.

His last rites will be performed on Thursday in his native village. The tragic incident has reignited concerns about human-wildlife conflict in the region.
