Former AIADMK Minister Vijayabaskar Resigns From MLA Post In Tamil Nadu Assembly
Vijayabaskar resigns as MLA, marking Tamil Nadu political shift.
Former Tamil Nadu Health Minister and senior AIADMK leader C Vijayabaskar resigned as Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) on Tuesday, marking a significant political development amid ongoing realignments within the state’s opposition landscape. Vijayabaskar, who represented the Viralimalai constituency in Pudukkottai district, submitted his resignation letter to Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker J C D Prabhakar. According to official sources, the letter was handwritten and found to be in order as per Assembly procedural rules, following which it was formally accepted by the Speaker.
A former Health Minister in the previous AIADMK government, Vijayabaskar has been considered a prominent figure in the party’s organisational structure. His resignation is being viewed as part of a broader pattern of discontent and shifting loyalties within the party, which has faced internal challenges in recent months. Political developments leading up to his resignation indicate that Vijayabaskar was among a section of AIADMK legislators who had extended support to the ruling TVK government during a trust vote held on May 13. This move had already highlighted emerging divisions within the opposition party and intensified speculation over the stability of its legislative base.
In addition to his legislative actions, Vijayabaskar had recently made remarks indirectly criticising the leadership of AIADMK chief Edappadi K Palaniswami, without naming him directly. He had stated that leadership should not be associated with power or arrogance, but rather with inclusiveness, accountability, and the ability to take everyone along. These comments were widely interpreted as a signal of internal disagreement within the party’s top ranks. His resignation follows a series of similar exits from the AIADMK legislature.

Earlier, at least four other MLAs had resigned from their positions and subsequently aligned themselves with the ruling TVK, further reducing the strength of the opposition in the Assembly and altering the political balance within the House. Party insiders suggest that these resignations reflect deeper structural tensions within AIADMK, including disagreements over leadership style, organisational direction, and electoral strategy. However, the party leadership has not issued a detailed response on Vijayabaskar’s resignation at the time of reporting.
The development is also being closely watched in the broader context of Tamil Nadu politics, where shifting alliances and legislative defections have increasingly influenced the state’s political dynamics. The emergence of new alignments and consolidation of ruling party strength has placed additional pressure on opposition formations. With Vijayabaskar’s exit, attention is now focused on whether more resignations or realignments could follow, and how the AIADMK leadership plans to stabilise its internal structure ahead of future electoral challenges. Political analysts note that such developments could have long-term implications for the opposition’s organisational coherence and electoral prospects in the state.
