Forensic Expert Recalls Severed Hand During AI-171 Crash Recovery A Year Later
Forensic expert recalls horrific AI-171 crash recovery scenes.
A year after the crash of Air India Flight AI-171 near Ahmedabad, the tragedy continues to weigh heavily on the forensic experts who were tasked with identifying the victims. The London-bound Boeing Dreamliner crashed just seconds after take-off on June 12 last year, killing 241 of the 242 people on board and becoming one of India’s deadliest aviation disasters in recent memory.
Among those still haunted by the incident is HP Sanghvi, director of the Gujarat Directorate of Forensic Sciences, who led a team of 38 forensic scientists during the massive identification effort that followed the crash. Working around the clock for more than two weeks, the team examined biological samples and other remains to help authorities confirm the identities of the victims and provide closure to grieving families.
Reflecting on the operation, Sanghvi recalled a particularly disturbing image that has remained etched in his memory. He described seeing a severed hand belonging to a female victim, with its fingers tightly locked together. According to him, the sight appeared as though the woman had been pleading for help in her final moments, a reminder of the fear and chaos that likely unfolded during the crash.

The forensic identification process was both technically challenging and emotionally draining. With many victims suffering severe trauma due to the impact, scientists had to rely on extensive forensic analysis to match remains with family records. The work required precision, patience and emotional resilience as experts dealt daily with the human consequences of the disaster.
Sanghvi said the experience underscored the immense responsibility carried by forensic teams in the aftermath of large-scale tragedies. While the scientific task was to establish identities accurately, the emotional toll of confronting such scenes remains difficult to forget. Even a year later, he said, memories of the victims and the heartbreaking circumstances surrounding the crash continue to resonate with those who were involved in the recovery and identification efforts.
