Football coach arrested in Maharashtra for raping minor over three years using career promises
A 36-year-old football coach has been arrested in Maharashtra’s Palghar district for allegedly sexually assaulting a 17-year-old trainee over a prolonged period. Police said the accused, identified as Abhijit Mendal, was taken into custody after the victim’s family lodged a complaint following her disclosure of the alleged abuse.
According to police, the girl had joined the accused’s football training academy in Vasai in 2023. He is alleged to have sexually exploited her repeatedly over the next few years. The case has been registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, along with charges of rape and criminal intimidation.
Investigators said the accused allegedly misused his position as a coach to gain the victim’s trust by promising her opportunities in football. Over time, he is believed to have built influence over the minor under the pretext of training and career advancement in the sport.
