FM Sitharaman Expresses Dissatisfaction Over Sanitation at Hampi During Vijayanagara Visit

Finance Minister slams poor upkeep at UNESCO site.

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman concluded her two-day visit to Vijayanagara district with expressed dissatisfaction regarding the maintenance standards at the historic Hampi site. Observations during her inspection highlighted deficiencies in cleanliness and administrative protocols overseen by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) Hampi Circle and local authorities.

During a visit to the Kodandarama Temple on Sunday, the minister encountered unhygienic conditions along access pathways, including instances of human waste. This prompted direct inquiries into sanitation provisions, with particular emphasis on the availability of public toilets within the UNESCO World Heritage area, underscoring potential hardships faced by regular tourists.

Sources indicate that Sitharaman raised concerns about the apparent lack of responsiveness from ASI officials and district administration to prior representations and memoranda seeking improvements in preservation and development initiatives. The minister highlighted discrepancies between reported efforts and on-ground realities at the significant cultural landmark.

The ministerial visit included chairing a workshop on Union Budget preparations, attended by over 120 senior officials. However, persistent appeals from local representatives for additional funding allocations reportedly contributed to the overall tenor of dissatisfaction during the engagements.

The episode has prompted renewed attention from residents and stakeholders toward longstanding challenges in sanitation, infrastructure, and management at Hampi. Calls have emerged for prompt interventions by relevant authorities to enhance facilities and preserve the integrity of this premier heritage destination.
