Flood Threat Looms as Krishna River Swells in Vijayawada
Rising floodwaters threaten Prakasam Barrage, precautions urged.
The Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA) issued an urgent warning on Thursday as floodwaters surged in the Krishna River, particularly at Prakasam Barrage in Vijayawada, where inflows and outflows reached a staggering 3.62 lakh cusecs by 10:45 AM. APSDMA Managing Director Prakhar Jain cautioned that the rising water levels could trigger a first-level flood warning before noon, urging immediate precautions for residents along the riverbanks and riparian areas.
"The floodwater inflows are intensifying at Prakasam Barrage," Jain stated in an official release. "People in low-lying areas must stay vigilant and avoid risks." The authority highlighted the danger posed by the gushing waters, which could lead to flooding in nearby communities if the situation escalates. With the Ganesh Chaturthi festival ongoing, Jain specifically advised celebrants against immersing idols in the swollen river, emphasizing the need to steer clear of streams, canals, and other waterbodies to prevent accidents.
The rising water levels are attributed to heavy rainfall in the Krishna River basin, which has increased inflows from upstream regions. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation, with flood management teams on high alert to mitigate potential damage to infrastructure and farmlands. Residents have been urged to follow safety advisories, avoid unnecessary travel near the river, and stay updated on further warnings as the state prepares for possible flooding in the coming hours.
