Flood Fury in Andhra Pradesh: Krishna, Godavari Rivers Surge

Rising waters threaten Andhra Pradesh as rivers swell rapidly,

Heavy rainfall has triggered a dramatic rise in floodwaters across Andhra Pradesh, with the Krishna and Godavari rivers swelling to alarming levels, according to the Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA). The Krishna river at Prakasam Barrage in Vijayawada is witnessing intense inflows and outflows of 4.05 lakh cusecs, while the Godavari river at Sir Arthur Cotton Barrage in Dowleswaram, East Godavari district, has reached 5.31 lakh cusecs.

The APSDMA issued a first-level warning at Prakasam Barrage as floodwaters surged, with inflows recorded at 3.62 lakh cusecs by 10:45 AM on Thursday. Upstream, the Srisailam Dam reported inflows of 3.06 lakh cusecs and outflows of 3.62 lakh cusecs, while Nagarjuna Sagar saw inflows of 2.69 lakh cusecs and outflows of 3.17 lakh cusecs. At Pulichintala, inflows stood at 3.13 lakh cusecs with outflows at 3.72 lakh cusecs, signaling a steady escalation in water levels across key reservoirs.

In the Godavari river, water levels are climbing steadily. At Bhadrachalam in Telangana, the river reached 37.7 feet, while Kunavaram recorded a water level of 15.78 meters and Polavaram 10.16 meters. APSDMA managing director Prakhar Jain warned that floodwater inflows at Dowleswaram could hit the first warning level by Friday, urging immediate caution.

Residents along the banks, in low-lying areas, and in riparian zones of both rivers have been advised to stay vigilant. Jain emphasized the need for heightened awareness, particularly for those living near streams and canals, as the risk of flash flooding looms. With the Ganesh Chaturthi festival approaching, authorities have issued a special advisory for celebrants planning to immerse idols, urging them to avoid riverbanks and waterlogged areas to ensure safety.

The heavy rainfall, attributed to a cyclonic circulation over Telangana and parts of Andhra Pradesh, has caused widespread concern. Local authorities are closely monitoring the situation, with emergency response teams on standby to assist vulnerable communities. The APSDMA has also activated helplines and is coordinating with district administrations to provide timely updates and support.

As the rivers continue to swell, residents are urged to follow official advisories, avoid crossing water bodies, and take necessary precautions to safeguard lives and property. The situation remains fluid, with further updates expected as the weather system evolves.
