Flights Diverted as Heavy Rains Lash Mumbai

Heavy rains disrupt Mumbai airport, diverting flights, delaying schedules.

Torrential rains lashed Mumbai on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, throwing operations at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, India’s second-busiest airport, into disarray. At least eight flights were diverted to nearby airports, including Surat, Ahmedabad, and Hyderabad, while numerous others faced significant delays due to incessant downpours and low visibility. The relentless rainfall inundated several parts of the city, complicating travel and prompting airlines to issue urgent advisories to passengers.

According to airport sources, six IndiGo flights, one SpiceJet flight, and one Air India flight were rerouted as a precautionary measure. Low-visibility procedures were implemented intermittently to ensure safety, though operations at the airport were never fully halted. The heavy rains, part of a broader monsoon surge affecting Maharashtra, created challenging conditions for both air and ground travel, with flooded roads further delaying passengers heading to the airport.

Air India took to X to warn travelers of potential schedule disruptions due to the persistent rain. Similarly, IndiGo posted on X, urging passengers to check flight statuses online before heading to the airport and to account for extra travel time due to waterlogged roads. “Persistent rainfall and thunderstorms are currently affecting Mumbai, leading to possible delays in flight operations,” IndiGo stated, emphasizing the need for vigilance.

The disruptions come amid a broader weather crisis in Maharashtra, with the India Meteorological Department forecasting intense rainfall in Mumbai and surrounding areas for the next 48 hours. The airport authorities are working to minimize disruptions, but with the rains showing no signs of abating, passengers are advised to stay updated on flight schedules and plan for potential delays. The situation underscores the challenges faced by one of India’s key aviation hubs during extreme weather events.
