Flash Flood Alert: 12 Jharkhand Districts on High Alert Amid Heavy Rainfall

The IMD urges residents to stay vigilant as the monsoon intensifies.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a flash flood warning for 12 districts in Jharkhand, effective until 5:30 p.m. today, as moderate to heavy rainfall continues to batter the state, an official said. The at-risk districts include Garhwa, Palamu, Latehar, Lohardaga, Gumla, Simdega, Khunti, Ranchi, Bokaro, Saraikela, West Singhbhum, and East Singhbhum.

Ranchi Meteorological Centre Deputy Director Abhishek Anand attributed the intense rainfall to a cyclonic circulation and monsoon trough. “Light to moderate rainfall is expected across Jharkhand today, with potential downpours in western and southern regions,” he noted. The state has seen significant rainfall since Sunday, with Chandwa in Latehar recording the highest at 90.2 mm in the last 24 hours.

Jharkhand has experienced a 69% surplus in rainfall from June 1 to July 6, receiving 417.2 mm against a normal of 246.2 mm. Latehar and Ranchi lead with 157% and 156% surplus rainfall, respectively, though Deoghar and Godda face deficits of 35% and 28%. The IMD also issued a yellow alert for heavy rainfall in eight districts, urging residents to stay vigilant as the monsoon intensifies.
