Five Indian IIT Graduates Achieve Top Positions In U.S. Industries

Five IIT graduates achieve top leadership roles abroad.

Graduates from India's prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) have long excelled on the global stage, particularly in the United States, where they lead major corporations and shape industries like technology and logistics. These alumni, often starting with rigorous engineering degrees, have risen to C-suite positions at Fortune 500 companies, demonstrating the impact of IIT's world-class education. Over 25,000 IIT graduates work in the US, with more than 600 in leadership roles at top firms and over 120 founding high-funded startups.

Sundar Pichai, CEO of Alphabet Inc. and Google, graduated with a B.Tech in metallurgical engineering from IIT Kharagpur in 1993. Born in Madurai, he moved to the US for advanced studies at Stanford and Wharton, joining Google in 2004 to lead products like Chrome and Android. Today, Pichai oversees a trillion-dollar empire focused on AI, search, and cloud services, earning praise for his calm, data-driven leadership.

Satya Nadella, Microsoft's CEO since 2014, earned his electrical engineering degree from what is now IIT Hyderabad in 1988 before pursuing a master's at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He transformed Microsoft from a software giant to a cloud leader, with Azure generating over $100 billion annually, emphasizing empathy and innovation in corporate culture.

Arvind Krishna serves as Chairman and CEO of IBM, having graduated with a B.Tech in electrical engineering from IIT Kanpur in 1985. Starting at IBM's research labs, he advanced to drive the $34 billion Red Hat acquisition and hybrid cloud strategies, blending deep R&D expertise with executive vision.Rajeev Subramaniam (often Raj Subramaniam) became FedEx's CEO in 2022 after graduating from IIT Bombay. With over 30 years at the company, he rose from marketing roles to lead global operations, navigating logistics challenges amid e-commerce growth; family members also contribute to FedEx.​

Parag Agrawal, former Twitter CEO until 2022, holds a computer science degree from IIT Bombay. He joined Twitter post-Stanford PhD, becoming CTO before ascending to CEO, highlighting IIT's role in producing tech innovators amid Silicon Valley's competitive landscape. These leaders inspire aspiring engineers worldwide.
