Five Dead, Two Injured After Car Returning From Wedding Falls Into Lakhimpur Kheri Canal

Five people returning from a wedding were killed and two others critically injured when their car plunged into the Sharda Canal near Paras Purwa village on the Dhekherwa–Girjapuri Highway shortly after midnight on Tuesday, police said Wednesday.

The accident occurred around 1 a.m. when the speeding vehicle veered off the road and fell into the canal. Initial investigations suggest the car’s central locking system engaged automatically upon impact, trapping all seven occupants inside as the vehicle rapidly sank. Local villagers, awakened by the loud splash and cries for help, rushed to the spot with torches and a boat, tied ropes to the submerged car, and hauled it out after breaking the windows with bricks to reach the victims.

Despite the fact that the seven passengers were immediately rushed to the Community Health Centre in Ramiya Behar, where doctors declared five dead on arrival. The deceased have been identified as Jitendra (23), Ghanshyam (25), Lalji (45), and Suresh (50)—all residents of neighboring Bahraich district—and one unidentified man. The driver, Babloo, and another passenger are battling for life in critical condition.

Sub-inspector Abhishek Singh of Padhua police station confirmed that a case has been registered and an investigation is underway to determine the exact cause, including possible overspeeding or driver error on the poorly lit stretch. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem, and authorities are coordinating with the families for last rites. The tragedy has once again highlighted the dangers of automatic central-locking systems in emergencies and the absence of safety barriers along several canal-side roads in the region.
