Fire Damages 16 Electrical Meters In Thane Building

A blaze in the Thane meter room damages property; no injuries are reported.

A fire that erupted in the electrical meter box room of a residential building in Thane city early Wednesday damaged 16 meters but caused no injuries, according to officials from the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC). The incident at Dnyaneshwar Smriti Society, a three-storey structure in the Dhokali area, was swiftly contained, averting potential escalation in a densely populated urban neighbourhood prone to such electrical hazards.

The blaze was reported to the fire control room at 4:36 a.m., originating on the ground floor where the building's electrical meters are housed. TMC Disaster Management Cell Chief Yasin Tadvi stated that the flames were limited to the meter box, with no spread to upper floors or adjacent units. Personnel from the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) and the local fire brigade arrived promptly, extinguishing the fire by approximately 5 a.m. using standard suppression techniques. Residents were briefly evacuated as a precaution, but all were allowed to return shortly after.

The cause remains under investigation, with preliminary assessments pointing to possible short-circuiting or faulty wiring—common triggers in older buildings like Dnyaneshwar Smriti Society, constructed over two decades ago amid Thane's rapid suburban expansion. No fatalities or serious injuries were reported, though the damage to the 16 metres will disrupt the power supply to affected apartments until repairs are completed, potentially spanning several days. MSEDCL teams are conducting safety audits to prevent recurrence, including checks for overloads and outdated infrastructure.

This event underscores persistent fire safety challenges in Maharashtra's urban fringes, where Thane district alone recorded over 1,200 incidents in 2024, per state fire services data, many linked to electrical faults in ageing high-rises. Authorities have urged building societies to comply with mandatory annual inspections under the Maharashtra Fire Prevention and Life Safety Measures Rules, 2009. TMC has dispatched engineers for on-site restoration, emphasising community vigilance in reporting anomalies to mitigate risks in monsoon-prone seasons.
