FIR Filed Against Pawan Khera Over Allegations On Assam CM’s Family

FIR filed against Pawan Khera over remarks linked to Assam polls.

Pawan Khera is facing legal action after an FIR was registered against him in Assam over remarks that authorities allege were intended to influence the ongoing election process. The case stems from statements made by Khera during recent press conferences, where he levelled allegations against Himanta Biswa Sarma’s wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, claiming she held multiple foreign passports and undisclosed overseas assets. The claims were strongly denied by the chief minister and his family, who termed them “false, fabricated and malicious.”

Based on a complaint filed by Sarma’s wife, the Assam Police registered an FIR at the Guwahati Crime Branch. The complaint argues that Khera’s remarks were part of a “planned exercise” aimed at influencing the poll process, especially as they were widely circulated on social media along with supporting visuals.

The FIR invokes multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including provisions related to making false statements in connection with elections, cheating, defamation, forgery, and criminal conspiracy. Investigators have indicated that the timing and amplification of the allegations—just days before polling—are central to the case.

The controversy has quickly escalated into a major political flashpoint ahead of the Assam elections. Assam Police teams have visited Khera’s residences in Delhi and Hyderabad as part of the investigation, while the Congress leader has moved court seeking anticipatory bail, arguing that the case lacks merit.

Meanwhile, the ruling side has accused the opposition of attempting to mislead voters, while Congress leaders have described the police action as politically motivated. The episode underscores intensifying tensions in the run-up to the polls, with both sides trading allegations and legal countermeasures. As the investigation continues, the case is likely to remain a key political issue in Assam, highlighting the intersection of election campaigning, legal scrutiny, and high-stakes rhetoric in a charged electoral environment.
