Fatal Car Crash in Kanker Claims Four Lives
Vehicle catches fire after hitting bridge barrier
A tragic accident in Chhattisgarh’s Kanker district left four young men dead and two injured when their car slammed into a concrete barrier on a bridge and burst into flames early Saturday morning. The incident occurred around 1:30 am near Kulgaon, under Kanker police station jurisdiction, as the group traveled from Keshkal to Kanker.
Preliminary investigations suggest the victims were intoxicated at the time of the crash, according to a police official. The car, a Maruti Suzuki Ertiga, veered out of control, struck the barrier, and ignited, trapping the occupants. Dipak Maravi (19), Suraj Uike (19), Yuvraj Sori (24), and Hemant Sori (20) died at the scene, while Pritam Netam (22) and Prithviraj Salam (21) sustained severe burns and were rushed to a nearby hospital.
Police and fire services responded swiftly, extinguishing the blaze and transferring the injured for treatment. A case has been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, with CCTV footage from the area under review to determine the exact cause of the crash, which occurred on National Highway 30, a known accident-prone stretch.

The tragedy underscores ongoing concerns about road safety in Chhattisgarh, where 8,424 fatalities were recorded in road accidents between 2018 and 2024. Authorities have urged stricter adherence to traffic regulations, particularly against drunk driving.
