Farooq Abdullah Hopes Centre Will Restore Jammu and Kashmir Statehood
NC Chief expresses optimism as J-K tourism, peace, and public aspirations improve.
National Conference (NC) president and former chief minister Farooq Abdullah expressed optimism on Saturday that the Centre would honour the aspirations of Jammu and Kashmir’s people by restoring the region’s statehood. Speaking to PTI Videos in Pahalgam, where he attended a golf tournament as the guest of honour, Abdullah said, “God willing, that will happen one day. We are hopeful that Delhi will pay attention, and the Prime Minister will ensure the people’s desire for statehood is fulfilled.”
The tournament, attended by around 50 golfers from across India, aimed to promote tourism and signal improved conditions in Kashmir. Abdullah highlighted the importance of tourism to the region’s economy, noting its role in sustaining livelihoods, especially during the six-month peak season.
Reflecting on the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam’s Baisaran meadows, which killed 26 people, mostly tourists, he emphasised that the attack was not supported by Kashmiris, who stood united against it. “This tournament sends a message that Kashmir is safe now, encouraging visitors to experience our hospitality,” he added.
Addressing recent controversies, including the vandalism of a plaque with the Ashoka emblem at the Hazratbal shrine and the arrest of Doda MLA Mehraj Malik under the Public Safety Act, Abdullah remarked that Jammu and Kashmir has faced challenges since 1947. “Nothing is static; things move.
The situation has improved, and I hope the country’s leadership will address the people’s aspirations to further enhance conditions,” he said.
