External Affairs Minister Emphasizes Diversified Energy Sources For India's National Security Interests
India pursues a balanced energy strategy beyond US partnership ties.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Sunday reiterated that India’s energy policy will continue to be guided by affordability, reliability, and diversification, stressing that the country’s decisions will remain rooted in an “India First” approach. His remarks came during an interaction alongside Marco Rubio in New Delhi amid growing strategic engagement between India and the United States.
Speaking on India’s energy requirements, Jaishankar said the country needs access to “multiple sources, large sources, dependable sources, and cheap sources” to ensure long-term energy security for its population and economy. He added that while the United States is an important energy partner for India, New Delhi will continue maintaining relationships with several other energy-producing nations as part of a balanced procurement strategy.
Jaishankar’s comments came in response to questions surrounding India’s energy imports and the broader geopolitical landscape under the administration of US President Donald Trump. The minister indicated that India’s policy decisions would primarily be based on national interest and the need to provide affordable fuel supplies to citizens amid global market fluctuations and international tensions.

India has increasingly diversified its energy imports in recent years to reduce dependence on any single supplier and shield itself from disruptions caused by geopolitical conflicts. The country remains one of the world’s largest energy consumers, making stable and cost-effective fuel supplies critical for economic growth, industrial activity, and inflation management.
The remarks also reflect India’s broader foreign policy strategy of balancing strategic partnerships while maintaining independent decision-making in key sectors such as energy and trade. Even as India strengthens ties with Washington in areas including defense, technology, and economic cooperation, officials have consistently maintained that national priorities and energy security will remain at the center of policy decisions.
