Exploring Borders: Karnah Valley To Open for Tourism, Promises New Opportunities
J&K to promote Karnah as a border adventure tourism hub.
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Saturday announced plans to develop Karnah in Kupwara district as a border tourism hub, highlighting the area’s potential for adventure and nature-based tourism.
Speaking in the legislative assembly, the Chief Minister said Karnah offers opportunities for trekking, hiking, and eco-tourism, which could be leveraged to boost tourism and strengthen the local economy. “We still have a lot to do in remote areas to promote tourism. Perhaps we have not done as much as we could have for tourism promotion,” Abdullah added.
The government is focusing on tapping the unexplored potential of border areas like Karnah to promote sustainable tourism while creating livelihood opportunities for local residents. The initiative is part of a broader effort to open previously restricted Line of Control (LoC) areas to visitors, including Gurez, Keran, Teetwal, and Uri.
These destinations offer breathtaking landscapes, high-altitude views of the border, and cultural experiences, aimed at attracting tourists and supporting local economies. Keran and Teetwal, situated along the Kishanganga River, allow visitors to see Pakistani villages across the LoC, while Teetwal is also home to the historically significant Sharda Temple.
Gurez Valley, Machil, and Karnah Valley are known for their scenic beauty, forested landscapes, and adventure tourism opportunities. With these measures, the J&K government hopes to make border tourism a key driver of economic growth, while offering travelers unique offbeat experiences in previously restricted regions.
