Ex-Judge Reddy Named INDIA Bloc's VP Pick

Former Supreme Court judge unites opposition

The INDIA bloc has unanimously selected former Supreme Court judge B Sudershan Reddy as its candidate for the Vice-Presidential election, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge announced today.

Born in July 1946, Justice Reddy served over 16 years in India’s constitutional courts. He began his judicial career as a permanent judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court in 1995, later becoming Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court in 2005. Elevated to the Supreme Court in 2007, he retired in 2011.

Reddy’s legal journey started in 1971 when he enrolled as an advocate with the Andhra Pradesh Bar Council. He served as a government pleader (1988-90), additional standing counsel for the Central government (1990), and legal adviser for Osmania University.

In 2013, he briefly held the role of Goa’s first Lokayukta, resigning within seven months for personal reasons. Currently, he serves on the Board of Trustees of the International Arbitration and Mediation Centre, Hyderabad.

Kharge hailed the unified decision, stating, “All INDIA bloc parties have agreed on one name, a significant step for democracy.” The announcement underscores the opposition’s collective strategy to field a seasoned jurist for the prestigious post.
