Ex-CM’s Urgent Plea: Unite for Manipur’s Peace
Biren Singh calls for unity to restore peace.
Former Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh made a heartfelt appeal on Wednesday for unity across political and ideological divides to restore peace and foster harmonious coexistence in the state. Speaking on the sidelines of the 134th Patriots Day celebrations, Singh emphasized the importance of collective action to address Manipur’s challenges, drawing inspiration from the state’s historical resilience.
"Despite knowing defeat was certain, Yubraj Tikendrajit, Thangal General, Chirai Naga, and other brave souls fought against the British in the Anglo-Manipur War of 1891. Patriots Day honors their sacrifice and reminds us of Manipur’s enduring legacy," Singh told reporters. "Today, we must set aside political and ideological differences to work together for peace and unity in our state. This is my earnest appeal to all people of Manipur."
Singh highlighted ongoing efforts to stabilize the region, noting, "Even without a popular government, our MLAs, the governor, and officials are working tirelessly to restore peace." He urged citizens to support these initiatives and prioritize peaceful coexistence.

Earlier in the day, Singh joined Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, MLAs, and senior officials in paying floral tributes to Bir Tikendrajit and other fallen heroes at a state-level ceremony commemorating the Anglo-Manipur War. Patriots Day, observed annually on August 13, marks the execution of Bir Tikendrajit and Thangal General in 1891 for their resistance against British colonial rule. The event serves as a powerful reminder of Manipur’s fight for sovereignty and its call for unity in the face of modern challenges.
Singh’s appeal comes at a critical time, as Manipur grapples with internal tensions and seeks to heal divisions. He called on communities to bridge gaps, foster dialogue, and work collaboratively to ensure a peaceful future for the state.
